About Us
The New Century Council was founded by
business and community leaders in 1992 for the purpose of creating a citizen-led strategic
planning process in an eleven county, five city, thirty-four town, multi-regional
geographic area, now known as the New Century Region.
Over 1,000 citizens volunteered their time on 33 teams and
recommended 150 strategies for implementation. In 1997, the Council evolved its mission from visioning to facilitating implementation of the
Board adopted projects. In 1999, the Council concluded its work and contributed its
vision to the Center for Innovative Leadership.
The New Century Region (see
map) was codified by the General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Virginia in
1995. The Region was also officially designated "Virginia's Technology
Corridor" in 1997 by the General Assembly.
